"Pretty Bad Things" (Back Story of Season 7 - Spoilers for Overseas Viewers)This is a featured page

Here's a new fanfic about one character's struggle between good and evil. This fic attempts to tell the back story of something most of us have been wondering about since it was revealed in the 4th episode. Those of you who have seen the first four episodes should know what I’m talking about, and the title of the story should be a pretty good clue. If you don’t know what I’m talking about because you haven’t seen the first 4 episodes of season 7, DO NOT read the story because it will ruin some great scenes for you. For that reason, I won’t even say which character this mostly revolves around, but for those who have seen season 7 so far it should be obvious.

The first part is an extended version of the scene where Jack and Tony are driving from Bill and Chloe's hideout to go meet Emerson.

"Listen, Jack, even if we make it out of this alive and manage to stop them, we're still going to be in a lot of trouble," Tony says as they begin driving to meet Emerson and his crew.

"Yeah, no kidding," Jack scoffs. "As if I wasn't facing enough time in jail before I helped to break you out."

"Yeah, I know. I don't understand why you didn't cut a deal before you agreed to help them track me down."

"Because I don't work like that, Tony," Jack snaps. "I didn't want to believe that you were involved in this but they had evidence that was pretty hard to dispute that you were a danger to potentially millions of people. I didn't need a reward to understand that we couldn't let that happen."

"I see you still haven't changed a bit, Jack. Still as willing as ever to be a martyr no matter how many times you get screwed."

A flash of anger goes through Jack, but before he can respond Tony continues.

"Look, I don't fault you for that, Jack. Frankly, after everything I've done I wish I could be more like you."

"You're doing the right thing now, Tony. That's what counts."

"You sure about that, Jack? Because I would be willing to bet that if you knew everything I've done you'd feel differently."

"Maybe. But for right now it doesn't matter. Bill and Chloe obviously trust you, and for the time being so do I. But you better not give me any reason to doubt that trust."

"I won't, Jack. I want to stop these guys as much as you do, believe me. But I need you to promise me something."

"What?" Jack asks, a hint of exasperation in his voice.

"I know that even if we're successful, I'm probably going to spend the rest of my life in prison once this is over. So I don't plan on sticking around and I suggest you get the hell out of here too."

"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it."

"Yeah, well in case we don't have time to make plans later, you should know that I'm planning on escaping to Mexico. I won't tell you where I'm going but you know a lot of my contacts down there, so it shouldn't be too hard to find me."

"Why are you telling me this, Tony? You know as well as I do that the first rule of planning an escape is that you don't tell people who might be questioned about your whereabouts where you're going."

"Yeah, I know. Unless you want to give that person some leverage to negotiate with."

"I don't understand."

"I think you do, Jack."

"You want me to turn you in?"

"Only if you can leverage it to get them to cut you a break."

"Tony..."

“Look, Jack, we’ve both done enough shit to spend the rest of our lives in prison. The difference is, everything you’ve done has been with the intent of helping the country and saving lives. I wish I could say the same for myself, but I can’t. If I wanted to cut a deal I’d have gone to the authorities to begin with. I know what I’m facing and I probably deserve it. And before you say no, talk to Bill and Chloe. When they tell you what I did you’re going to wish that you had snapped my neck off when you had the chance.”

Jack contemplates for a minute, trying to decide if he even wants to know what Tony has been up to. He decides it's a bad idea for him to ask right now, when he and Tony need to be able to work together. He decides to drop the subject for now, especially since there are more immediate questions he needs to ask Tony.

"So tell me about Emerson," he says.

And from there, the real scene continues, where Tony says that Emerson has been like a brother but he knows he's on the wrong side of this.

----------------------------

What do you think so far? I'll keep writing if you guys like it, and try to explore the back story of how Tony came to work with Emerson and what those "pretty bad things" were. Hint: they tie into events of season 6, and some of them affect Jack personally. Stay tuned...
