His family:
Kiefer William Frederick Dempsey George Rufus Sutherland is the older (his sister Rachel was born 7 minutes after him) of twins born to actor Donald Sutherland and actress Shirley Douglas on December 21, 1966.

His maternal grandfather was Tommy Douglas, long time (1944-61) premier of Saskatchewan and widely regarded as the father of Canada's universal health care system. In 2004, Douglas was voted "The Greatest Canadian" in a CBC poll.

He has an older half-brother (Tom) by his mother and three younger half-brothers (Roeg, Rossif and Angus) by his father.

Kiefer has a daughter, Sarah Jude (b. February 1988), by his first wife Camelia Kath. He also has a stepdaughter, Michelle, from that marriage and a grandson, Hamish, who is Michelle's first child. He was engaged to Julia Roberts and the wedding was called off just days before the actual nuptials.

He has two stepsons, Julian and Timothy, from his second marriage to Kelly Winn.

He's currently single.

Education: Left High School at 15 to pursue acting full-time. Kiefer went to Martingrove Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke, Ontario.

Hobbies: Vintage guitar collecting, Music, playing hockey, horses/riding.

Keifer's first film role was in the movie "Max Dugan Returns" in 1983. His first major role was in the Canadian drama "The Bay Boy" (1984), which earned Sutherland a Genie Award nomination for best actor.

Kiefer plays ice hockey on a celebrity team. He traveled the rodeo circuit in the late 1990's and won rodeos in Phoenix and Albuquerque. He earned first place in the US Team Roping Championships. When starting up on the rodeo circuit he decided to buy all the things needed. The horses, the bulls/cows, the tractors, the 900 acre ranch in Montana, then sold it once he was finished.

It's complicated for me to play this character, because, unlike a film, I don't know the end but I want a situation to arise within the show where he's actually confronted with a lot of the things he's done."
  • (on his 24 character, Jack Bauer): "One thing that moved me to tears was a news clip of three firemen carrying equipment up the stairs of the World Trade Center. They had a look of determination on their faces that was one of the most honorable things I'd ever seen. That unquestioning dedication to duty is something I would love to instill in this character."
